Woodhead and Good Game win Gold Lizzies

Ben Woodhead and ABC TV's Good Game have taken out the Gold Lizzies for Best Journalist and Best Titles respectively, while CNET Networks swept up a bag of awards at the sixth annual Sun Microsystems IT Journalism Awards at Star City on Friday night.

Woodhead was a frequent visitor to the winner's podium, collecting individual honours as Best Industry Journalist and the top gong of Best Journalist. While he collected those awards for his work at The Australian, he also represented Fairfax Business Media, who had another successful night with MIS Magazine winning Best Business Technology Title while the Financial Review won Best Industry Title. Paul Smith was also judged to be the Best Business Technology Journalist while Julian Bajkowski won Best News Journalist.

The ABC TV's Good Game won the gold Lizzie for Best Title after scoring through the roof as winner of the Best Multimedia Coverage award and became only the second non-print title to take home the top prize.

CNET had a monster night. ZDNet Australia was voted Best Website, CNET.com.au won Best Personal Title while GameSpot AU collected Best New Title. Journalists Derek Fung and Dan Chippiana took home Best Consumer Technology Journalist and Best Reviewer respectively, while David Braue won Best Columnist for his ZDNet blog.

The Australian won Best News Title, while Michael Sainsbury picked up another Best Communications Journalist award.

PC Powerplay completed a strong year by winning Best Gaming Title while Seamus Byrne picked up the gong for Best Gaming Journalist. Elissa Baxter knocked off strong competition to win Best New Journalist, while Jeanne-Vida Douglas scooped the Best Article prize. Darren Yates added to his swag of Lizzies collected over the years to win Best Technical Journalist.

This year's awards, which were sponsored by Sun Microsystems, Watterson Marketing Communications and CEBIT Australia, were completely sold out and attracted a record number of entries.

"All of the winners and commended journalists should be very proud because the competition this year was particularly fierce as the awards have just continued to grow," said Phil Sim, CEO of MediaConnect Australia.

That said, Sim noted, that a full review of the awards and judging processes would be undertaken over the next month.

"The Sun Microsystems IT Journalism Awards have firmly established themselves as the top honour in the profession of technology media and journalism and it's important that we continue to evolve the way the awards are judged to keep pace with the changes taking place in our industry," Sim said. "The current categories, criteria and judging processes were created when print dominated but as this year's awards demonstrated, technology media comes in a multitude of formats now and our belief is that it's time for a complete review of the awards process for next year."

"We'll be sending out surveys to all participants and judges over the next week and then will be looking to announce within the next month the new format for the 7th annual awards."
